The Rich History of The Barclay

The history of The Barclay is as rich as the land in which it sits on.   The hotel until the 1960s was independently owned dating back to its founding date in January 1925.  The celebrated architect Eliot Cross and millionaire real estate developer W. Seward Webb leased a parcel of land on Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets from New York Central Reality and Terminal Corporation, owned by the Vanderbilt family.  Later that year, construction began on The Barclay, designed by Cross and Cross in neo-Federal, American Colonial style. Cross and Cross would later go on to design the Tiffany and Co. building on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. Eliot Cross and his brother John belonged to a well-heeled New York family with strong social connections to the Astors and Vanderbilts.

Creating The Soiree Of A Lifetime

As grand as this space may be, it is important for you to realize that quality is our priority. We will not simply seek a venue that doesn’t provide us with the ambiance that we are looking for that will make this a memorable experience.  Not our wedding. We want your love to be storybook worthy that will be told to your children, your grandchildren, and your great grandchildren….because your love is what legacy is built from.

Although we may live in a social media-driven society your wedding is not an Instagram experience but quite the contrary.  You want your guests to live in the moment.  Feel your joy as they walk through the space.  Much like the socialites of the past, their intention was to remain discreet in their many celebrations, not attracting too much attention so as to control the hotel’s image as an exclusive, desirable destination. Your wedding deserves the same sentiments.

So for those of you that want the personalized touch, and want your event to remain private, this may just be the space you are looking for right in the heart of the busiest city in the world.  What an oxymoron!

As I got my grand tour of the property and heard the rich history, I was amazed.  As a history buff, it brought me great pleasure hearing the value placed on entertainment.  There was an art to it.  Therefore I took the opportunity to inquire about how you, our readers can have all you deserve in this grand property. So we did some investigation.

For your information

Who is the chef on staff, and can they give us a quote on creating a menu for a wedding on the property?

InterContinental New York Barclay’s Chef is Peter Betz. ’When planning a wedding menu, I like to get to know the Bride & Groom. I like to hear about what dishes they grew up eating on special occasions and incorporate some of that into the final selections (always with a Barclay spin of course). I always want to wow the guests but also leave them knowing that the Barclay takes the time to design unforgettable events that are truly customized to each client. No two Barclay weddings are ever the same!’’
