Proper Skin Prep for Makeup Application

Do you feel that your makeup is not lasting long throughout the day? It could be that you are not prepping your skin properly. Properly prepping your skin prior to your makeup application, based on your skin type, is essential. This will make a huge difference in the way your skin feels, and the wear of your makeup. You should always start with a clean slate by cleansing, toning, and hydrating your skin. Take a moment to thoroughly wash your face by using a facial cleanser. Using a cleanser will keep your pores clean, will dissolve makeup, remove dirt/oils, and will prepare skin for other products.

After cleansing, it is suggested that you use a toner to remove any residue left by the cleanser, and most importantly to restore your skin’s natural PH. Toners are also great to wake up, re-energize, and plump up the skin. You can apply with a cotton ball, or spray directly onto the skin.

Afterwards make sure that you use a moisturizer to add hydration into the skin. This is one product that you should definitely not skip. Moisturizers have great benefits such as protecting your skin from the elements, nourishing skin, help to balance oil-water content of skin, and can treat various conditions such as irritations, aging, or dehydrated skin.

Let’s clear up one misconception about moisturizers. People who have oily skin feel that they do not need to use moisturizer. Even oily skin needs hydration, and protection from a moisturizer! If not hydrated properly, this skin type tries to overcompensate for dryness by producing more oil, and can also become dehydrated. In addition to hydrating your skin always make sure that you are also hydrating the under eye area with an eye cream. Gently dab and pat the cream underneath your eye using your ring finger (this applies the least amount of pressure). Remember to be gentle; the eye area is one of the most sensitive and delicate parts of our body. Once you apply your moisturizer and eye cream wait a few minutes, and allow it to dry before you continue.

Lastly, using a makeup primer is a great option. Makeup primers help to create a really smooth canvas on the face prior to your makeup application. They help to fill in pores, fine lines, and help makeup to adhere a lot better to your skin. You can also use an eye shadow makeup primer to prolong the wear of eye makeup. If you apply eye makeup directly on the eyelids it can possibly ball up, or crease. In addition, the natural oils in your skin will soak up the pigments, and this is what causes the color to fade away.

One of my beauty secrets, and go-to products are moisturizers by Embryolisse Laboratories. In particular the Lait-Crème Concentre, which is great for all skin types. Not only is this a great nourishing moisturizer, but it also functions as a makeup remover and a primer. I love to use it prior to applying makeup on my clients, because everything just glides so smoothly over top. It allows me to blend creams, liquids, and powders for a flawless complexion. Even when worn alone, it leaves a natural glow on the skin. It is composed of emollient oil and natural active ingredients such as shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera, and soy proteins. In addition, it also paraben free. This 3-in-1 skincare product is a personal favorite, and my clients love it as well. I also carry the Hydra-Mat Emulsion in my makeup kit, which is great for an oily skin type. Not only does it hydrate but it helps to control the oil, shine, and leaves a matting effect on the skin. I alternate between the two throughout the year. During the summer time my skin tends to get oily, and I use the Hydra-Mat Emulsion to keep the shine at bay.

Prepping your skin creates a barrier between your skin and makeup. If you just apply makeup directly on the skin it could cause your skin to feel tight, can possibly settle in your pores making it obvious, and may not wear as long. If you feel like your makeup is wearing off throughout the day then incorporate some of these tips into your routine, and remember to always sanitize or wash your hands thoroughly prior to touching your skin!
