Celebrity Clean Up: Neutral Lips, The Queen & Lady Day

Welcome to Celebrity Clean Up, where I discuss the looks of celebrities in the media and recommend cleaner versions of their current beauty looks. So what is clean? It’s an umbrella term currently used in the beauty that means vegan, organic, natural, green, and sustainable.

Finally, the award shows are back! We can now chit-chat about our favorite celebrity makeup looks, and how to recreate them on ourselves. Neutral and nude lips were a consistent look at the BET Awards. We saw this from several of the performers and presenters to The BET Lifetime Achievement Award winner Queen Latifa. I think the nude trend surfaced from not being able to wear highly pigmented lip colors in 2020 since most of us did without lipstick under our masks.

Let’s get into the clean beauty bags of some of the ladies from the BET Awards:

Queen Latifa:

The BET Lifetime Achievement Award Winner showed off her beautiful skin and light coppery lips. To get this look try products by Vapour Organic Beauty. Start with a Vapour Primer suited for your skin type, followed by Luminous Foundation. The formula hydrates the skin with organic sunflower oil and is a perfect blend of skincare and makeup, calming the skin with frankincense, myrrh + lotus. It offers medium coverage, and can also be used as a concealer). Vapour makes universal shades, so whatever your skin tone, you should be able to find a match (use powder lightly where needed). Brows are kept very simple and natural (finally) and can be achieved by using the brand’s brow-defining pencil. The eyes can be achieved using the eyeshadow quad in Archetype, by playing up the outer corners with an Ink black eye pencil. Cheeks are glowing! This is achieved by using Vapours High Voltage Lipstick in Bold. The face doesn’t know where a product is supposed to go, so play around and have fun! You can feel safe doing this when you know the ingredients in your products are clean. Next, we finish the look with a neutral Lip Nectar in Tempt. Her look might have been soft, but her acceptance speech was bold! She shared that BET allowed beautiful blackness to ride and shine. She ended her speech with a love shout-out to Ebony her same-sex partner. Her Final words: “Happy Pride”.

Andra Day:

This stunning performer took home the award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Her makeup is what I like to call ‘Dramatic Summer Nights’. This look can be achieved by using clean makeup products by Kjaer Weis. Start with their cream foundation (made with organic coconut oil), which can multi-task as a concealer (use powder where needed). Next, accent brows with medium brown brow gel. Play up eyes with eye shadow quadrant in Wanderer focusing on the shades Earthy Calm (a warm brown) and Magnetic ( a brown gold ). Keep the waterline clean and without liner, but accentuate upper lids with a black liner. On cheeks use The Cheek Collective in Blossoming. I love the shade Gilded in this collection for a nice highlight (like on Andra). On the lips, I suggest lip pencil in Rich and Matt, Naturally Liquid Lipstick in Enthralling.

No matter your skin tone a neutral or nude lip is a great option for your wedding day, which is your award day. It photographs well and the color will not overpower your partner’s lips when you kiss. Until next time. Keep it clean
