Last season MWNY presented a small grouping at Spring Studio with one-on-one appointments where attendees could see her color-block 60’s collection up-close and personal. For fall 22, designer Marrisa Wilson took it to the next level and had her first runway show which she titled,”Somewhere North of Earth.”
The eponymously named brand was founded by the Guyanese-American designer who was born and raised in New Jersey. Ms. Wilson’s focus is to “celebrate and promote diversity in the fashion industry,” and also to empower women creatives in their quest to achieve their dreams. She promotes natural beauty in multicultural women which is evident in her own natural locks and beautiful wholesome smile.
Several fashion industry journalists were in attendance to review the show and probably know her past work for established companies such as, J. Mendel, Oscar de la Renta, Rag & Bone, Calvin Klein, & DKNY. The outer-space theme played out with computer rendered prints on simple silhouettes styled with black tights and Doc Martin boots. Contrary to her promoting natural hair, several models worn Medusa-type brides which was a focal point and was the most original aspect of the model’s look. Wilson’s runway also offered three one-of-a-kinds, experiential art NFTs, that she drew and a limited edition bomber jacket also with her illustration.
Her exuberant finale dance down the runway spread a contagious enthusiasm for her first runway collection and seemed to say that Wilson herself is not afraid of the spotlight.

Designer Byron Lars began his fall collection with the same cotton shirting fabric that he so skillfully and famously used the 90’s. His shirt dresses pushed the boundaries of fashion expectations and propelled him to a visionary level. With his latest collection In Earnest, helmed with partner Sheila Gray, he begins with a layered nod to his origins. In Ernest is a tight grouping of layered looks that can be peeled off and worn independently. Fabrics and prints are not limitations in Byron’s world and he mixes them with abandon in this tight tonal grouping of looks.

Lapointe opted for appointments in her Soho showroom where she personally walked buyers and journalists through the pigmented racks of looks. The vibrantly hued collection are a treat for fashion lovers to see up close. Special detailing—feathers, sequins or shimmery satin fabric, was deftly and tastefully crafted with a light touch into simple silhouettes. She is redefining glamour in the most modern terms with clothing that is elegant enough for dress up but also very easy to wear. The palette is spectacular and there is a a shade for every color on the spectrum Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Zendaya and Gigi Hadid, all have all worn her clothing.
