Whip Me into Shape for My Big Day

buffbrides1
It’s winter and us folks living in the cold climes will start having a hard time resisting the comfort food that goes with staying indoors, bracing the cold and fighting off the winter doldrums. It’s the foods we all like… mac and cheese, pancakes drenched in maple syrup, buttermilk fried chicken, pizza with the works, spaghetti and meatballs… and oh, did I mention dessert.

“Whip me into shape. I must look fabulous by June!” “Remember those words?” I ask, quoting one of my clients whose wedding day was fast approaching. It was last winter and the bride-to-be had a knock-out wedding gown that was on order for her big day in June. “Yes,” she replies, “but we have 3 months, that’s enough time.” Not really. Three months is how long it takes to see noticeable change in your body. And if getting fit and toned is your goal, the sooner you start the better. Your body took a while to get out of shape and takes a while to get back in shape.

Dreaming is fine when you’re thinking of love and marriage and that gorgeous locale of a honeymoon but fitness is much more reality based, almost mathematical. You can’t put in more calories than you burn and you can’t work off bad eating habits. Getting in shape takes time. You don’t want to do anything radical and damaging to your health. That’s not how you want to start the new chapter of your life, really now.

Every bride wants to look perfect on her special day and is willing to spend what it takes. But getting toned arms, a small waistline and that sexy backside is all on you. Oh, and another thing! Once you put in the time and effort to reach your fitness goal, don’t stop. Maintain and improve. Keep exercising 3 to 5 times a week. Vary your activities to increase flexibility and endurance, improve balance and posture. Try Pilates, yoga, belly dancing, hiking, mountain climbing and jogging.

Looking and feeling great are important must-haves for a happy life. Keep exercising. Do it for yourself and for the people who love you. Staying fit is one of the few things you have control over. Work out regularly, plan meals carefully and keep portions small when indulging. Be consistent. Own your power and be the best you can be. Not just on your wedding day, which sure is special, but every day!
