TEN QUESTIONS TO ASK A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Getting married is an exciting time and planning a wedding can be a little unnerving. When researching a photographer for your wedding, knowing which questions to ask can help make the process easier and you happier. Here goes:

1. What type of packages do you offer? The types of packages or “collections” offered vary from photographer to photographer. When presented with the list of items in the package, ask to see them and make sure that you understand exactly what you will be receiving.

Wedding photography packages can be offered as a Set Package, in which for a predetermined price, you receive a series of items. A Custom Package, in which the photographer works with you and your budget on creating a one-of-a-kind package. Or an A La Carte Package, in which you pick and choose which items you want to include and the pricing is done individually.

2. Are you insured? Many event spaces, hotels and private buildings require that wedding photographers are insured with a liability policy of a minimum of $1,000,000.

3. What is your cancellation policy? Before signing your contract, make sure that you understand the cancellation policy; while we hope for the best, you want to make sure that you know your options. Some photographers have a strict no refund policy and others allow your money to be used towards other offers in their studio.

4. When is the final payment due? Due dates vary and many photographers are flexible with these dates.

5. Do I receive digital negatives? How important is it for you to have a copy of your digital negatives? For many, this could be a deciding factor in determining whom you select as your photographer.

6. What is your timeline for presenting photographs after the wedding and completing albums? Is the timeline written in your contract? Understand how your photographer’s process works.

7. What is your style? Wedding photography is stunning and photographs can have various styles. Familiarize yourself with wedding photography styles. They range from photojournalistic to traditional to artistic. Make sure that photographer has the look that corresponds to how you view your wedding day.

8. How long do I have to purchase reprints? Review all deadlines.

9. Are you the actual photographer who will be photographing my wedding? Make sure that you know which photographer is showing up to your wedding and view their work before hand.

10. Can I speak to your references? Ask for a list of at least 5 to 10 couples.

Bonus Question: Why are you a wedding photographer? This is a good question to ask to learn about the person behind the camera.
