Designer Victor Glemaud’s Journey From Haiti To Rising Star

It’s a rare person who achieves their dreams in a straight line. Victor Glemaud knew he loved fashion but the journey to his vibrantly hued and optimistic knitwear collection was an evolution. Every turn in his decades long career shaped the designer and businessman he is now. His inclusively sized label is worn by celebrities and sold at prestigious retailers which, no doubt is because of Glemaud’s 360 knowledge of the fashion industry.

Born in Haiti, his family moved to the USA when he was 3, where he was raised in Queens New York. As a young man he realized 2 areas of direction; culinary arts or fashion. After a short stint at a culinary college he decided that fashion was his jam and entered the design program at The Fashion Institute Of Technology.

While at college, he met designer, Patrick Robinson by chance and asked him if he could intern for him. It was there that he learned many aspects of the business, from sales to design to presenting the collection at a runway show. But another turn in the road was in the cards for Glemaud. Ever curious, he accepted an opportunity to work at one of the most distinguished PR firms in New York, KCD. He accepted the position and put this design goals on the back burner. At KCD he promoted the hottest fashion brands of the early aughts and learned how to create a buzz for designers with celebrity and magazine exposure. He made lifelong friends and connections.

In 2007, his old boss, Patrick Robinson became the designer for Paco Rabanne in Paris and asked Glemaud to work with him. He moved to Paris and assisted Robinson while also also starting a mens fashion label as a side gig. There were more detours which added to his well-rounded fashion experience, one of which was designing for Tommy Hilfiger but he eventually achieved his dream of his own fashion collection after much reflection. He recalled that knits were the pieces that were most well received from his menswear label while the nature of knits was a big plus because it allowed for a forgiving fit. Victor Glemaud’s joyful collection was born in 2016.

Glemaud believes strongly in inclusivity in size, shape and gender. He won the CFDA new-comer award in 2017 and was honored at the Haitian embassy in Washington DC with Ambassador Alidor in the same year. You can find his body-con vibrant looks at everywhere from Shopbop to Saks Fifth Avenue and he recently launched a collection for HSN. In 2022 he collaborated with the home design firm, Schumacher to create a toille fabric based on the Haitian culture. For Glemaud, the stars are aligned for an expanded reach meeting customers at a variety of lifestyle intersections.
