However, it is precisely because of my cosmopolitan background that I sought the tranquility of Door County, Wisconsin. Sometimes, you just want to slow down and explore what’s in your backyard. My recent trip to Door County, less than a two-hour flight from New York, left me well-rested and refreshed. This Midwestern gem is definitely worth exploring for those who love the great outdoors, the simple beauty of nature, serenity, and cultural discovery.

Door County, a charming region with a rich Swedish heritage, offers a unique blend of culinary experiences that reflect its cultural background. The local businesses, mostly family-owned and operated, exude a true sense of community and genuine hospitality. My gracious host, Warren Zaug, owner of the Country House Resort in Sister Bay, made me feel right at home. The view from my room was epic, setting the perfect tone for a serene getaway.
During my stay, I had the pleasure of exploring various local eateries, each offering its own unique charm and flavors. Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay provided a delightful culinary experience with its authentic Swedish cuisine. The Carrington Restaurant in Egg Harbor was impressive with its delicious dishes and inviting atmosphere. Karin Skare, owner of Hill Street Cafe in Fish Creek, offered a warm welcome and tasty treats that made my visit memorable.

For a taste of artisanal delights, Macready Artisan Bread Company in Egg Harbor was a must-visit, where the fresh bread and baked goods were simply outstanding. The Old Post Office Restaurant in Ephraim offered a cozy, nostalgic dining experience with its home-cooked meals and friendly service. Renard’s Artisan Cheese in Sturgeon Bay was a cheese lover’s paradise, showcasing a variety of locally made cheeses that were perfect for snacking and gift-giving.
Thyme Restaurant & Catering and Twelve Eleven Wine Bar + Provisions in Sister Bay provided a sophisticated dining experience, with exquisite dishes and a well-curated wine selection that made for a perfect evening out. The White Gull Inn in Fish Creek and Wilson’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim added to the delightful culinary journey.

From exploring local breweries like Hatch Distilling Co and One Barrel Brewing Company to visiting wineries like Anchored Roots Vineyard & Winery and Stone’s Throw Winery, there was no shortage of ways to enjoy the local flavors. Outdoor enthusiasts would appreciate the natural beauty of Peninsula State Park and Newport State Park.
For anyone thinking there’s nothing to do in Wisconsin, Door County is just a flight away, and by the time you drive to your destination, all your city stress will have rolled away.
