As World Bride Magazine celebrates its 20th anniversary, it continues its legacy of honoring beauty across textures, traditions, and cultures. Few styles embody this mission more than braids—an enduring expression of identity, artistry, and heritage that transcends time.
For generations, braids have been far more than a hairstyle. Rooted deeply in African history, intricate patterns once communicated status, lineage, spirituality, and community belonging. Braids were never simply decorative—they were storytelling, woven strand by strand. Today, their presence on runways, in bridal beauty, and everyday life reflects a tradition that has never lost its cultural power.
Now, braids sit at a critical intersection of culture, fashion, and wellness. As the textured hair community evolves, so does the conversation around scalp health, product safety, and protective styling. When done with care, braiding supports healthy hair growth while preserving cultural authenticity.
“Royal queens across Africa wore braids to signal status, wealth, and lineage,” says Diane Da Costa, CEO of SimpleeBeautiful and co-founder of the Natural Hairstyle and Braid Coalition (NHBC). “That artistry continues to inspire. It is never lost—it evolves.”

Product safety is also shaping the future. Kadidja Dosso, founder of Dosso Beauty, emphasizes the importance of transparency: “We conduct clinical testing to ensure our braiding hair is non-toxic and hypoallergenic. Consumers deserve safe, trustworthy products—especially those with sensitivities.”
Looking ahead, the industry is moving toward innovation rooted in wellness. Erin, co-founder of NHBC, envisions biodegradable, plant-based braiding materials that prioritize both health and sustainability. “Our hair has always been an economic pathway to freedom,” she notes. “It’s time the industry aligns with that truth.”
For brides, braids carry even deeper meaning. “A wedding is about authenticity,” explains Diane C. Bailey, NHBC co-founder and master stylist. “When a bride embraces her natural texture, she affirms that her beauty does not need alteration. Braids become a symbol of lineage, self-acceptance, and timeless elegance.”
Through advocacy, organizations like the Natural Hairstyle and Braid Coalition continue to push for education, legislation, and industry standards that protect both professionals and consumers.
This global legacy is celebrated annually on July 29 with International I Love Braids Day®, founded by Debra Hare-Bey. Marking its 10th anniversary, “The Year of the Braid” honors a tradition that continues to shape beauty, culture, and identity across generations.
