Grace of Lace

With a blend of artistic ingenuity and entrepreneurial acumen, this Parisian luminary not only helped transform the landscape of lace production but also set new standards for elegance and sophistication in high-end fashion. Join me as we delve into the life and legacy of Francois Damide, President of Solstiss Lace; Weaver Of Dreams.

The Historian

François, with his profound understanding of lace’s origins and evolution, is indeed a captivating historian, painting vivid tapestries of the Renaissance era in France, where the delicate art form of hand-made lace was created by ordinary women taking extraordinary risks in their daily hand sewing tasks. Francois goes on to share, with the support of King Francis I, lace was no longer a mere decorative embellishment; it became a symbol of status and prestige, coveted by royalty and aristocracy across Europe. François’s rich storytelling brings to life the grandeur of the French society, where lace became synonymous with opulence and refinement, adorning the garments of nobility and clergy alike.

Weaver of Dreams

As a young man, Francois dreamed of venturing out to explore the world, undeterred by the popularity that lace brought to his hometown; Caudry, France. Despite the allure of America’s promise and opportunity, François did find fulfillment in nurturing the rich legacy of lace-making with the House of Solstiss; a company on the rise in taking the lead in uniquely crafted lace design and development. In a town steeped in tradition and renowned for its intricate lace craftsmanship, François discovered a profound sense of belonging and identity as he fully embraced his leadership role managing Solstiss’  European region accounts like Chanel, Chloe, Lanvin, Dior, and more.

King of Lace

With the global demand soaring for its exquisite lace creations, Solstiss expanded its presence to the United States fulfilling Francois’s long-held dream of traveling to America. Today, François stands as a proud ambassador of the brand. His four-decade journey ushers him into a prominent partner and pioneer, showcasing the brand’s ingenuity, artistry, and craftsmanship to audiences across the globe.

François Damide is a devoted husband, father, and esteemed business leader. His passion for achieving business excellence is complemented by his capacity to inspire and mentor others genuinely. As a speaker and ambassador for Calais-Caudry Lace, he illuminates the intricate history that binds us together, instilling a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship and evolution that have propelled the world’s foremost lace manufacturer to its present stature.

History of Maison Solstiss

The name Solstiss combines two meanings. “Sol” originates from “solstice,” symbolizing the shortest and longest days of the year when the sun’s position is marked. The suffix ’tiss’ stems from the French word ‘tissage,’ which translates to ‘weaving.’ Solstiss represents the collective legacy of four lace manufacturing families [Ledieu Beauvillain, Henri and Victor Machu, Robert Belot, Edouard Beauvillain] who, foreseeing the challenges of market competition, made a strategic decision to safeguard their heritage and multi-generational craftsmanship through a merger.

Acquiring the original Leavers Loom lace machinery, named after its developer, John Lever, created to reproduce hand-made-like lace, Solstiss has preserved the ancestral workshop in Northern France, perpetuating its expertise across generations. This dedication has resulted in the creation of unparalleled lace, renowned worldwide for its exceptional quality. In 2011, the House of Solstiss was honored with the prestigious title of Living Legend, a distinction it continues to uphold with pride.
