Located in picturesque Victoria, British Columbia, the Fairmont Empress – also known as ‘Canada’s Castle on the Coast’ – is more than a hotel, it’s a slice of Canadian history.
The award-winning luxury hotel’s story began in the early 1900s when Canadian Pacific Railway decided to build chateau-style hotels across Canada to accommodate their affluent rail clients. These hotels were erected in iconic locations that showcased Canada’s breathtaking and diverse landscapes (The Empress’ sisters include stunning properties like the Banff Springs Hotel and Quebec City’s Chateau Frontenac.) Celebrated architect Francis Rattenbury was hired to bring this vision to life in Victoria.
Since the Fairmont Empress opened its doors in 1908, it’s hosted everyone from the British Royal family (Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Will and Kate and numerous other royals have also graced their Edwardian hallways) to Hollywood legends like Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn, Shirley Temple and John Wayne, who enjoyed slinging cocktails for strangers in the hotel bar.
Named a National Historic Site, the majestic property completed a $60+ million restoration in 2017, designed to celebrate its proud history while moving the hotel into a new era of modern luxury. In 2023, the property introduced a revamped Fairmont Gold Experience, including a major renovation to the Fairmont Gold floor.
With its fairytale-like atmosphere, storied history, and swoon-worthy setting, it’s hard not to feel in the mood for love while visiting the Fairmont Empress. A few months ago, I treated myself to a staycation at the iconic hotel and the experience did not disappoint.
If you’re considering getting married in Canada, here are a few reasons to keep the Fairmont Empress on your radar.
The Fairmont Gold Experience
This 88-room luxury “hotel within hotel” is home to a newly renovated lounge, exclusive amenities, and some of the best scenic views in Western Canada. It also has a private check-in area and concierge. Many brides love Fairmont Gold because it allows them a private, stress-free check-in process away from the rest of the hotel. In addition to ultra-luxe rooms and an exclusive outdoor patio, perfect for watching the sunset, Fairmont Gold offers a complimentary pantry featuring refreshments, snacks, and light bites – including delicious breakfast options. The adjacent lounge area is the perfect spot for a casual breakfast or a glass of champagne while enjoying the panoramic views of Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Stunning venues to choose from
Whether planning a large celebration or an intimate affair, the Fairmont Empress has several fabulous options that evoke its charming history.
Library
Originally called the Rose Room, or Ladies’ Lounge, when the hotel opened in 1908, the library is the perfect setting for a small wedding or reception. With the original hardwood flooring, wood paneling, and fireplace, The Library marries history with a cozy romance.
Bengal Room
Once the site of a historic cocktail lounge, the airy Bengal Room marries history with a hint of tropical glamor. Palms, ceiling fans, Indian art, and hand-carved West Coast wood tables create a refined, bohemian vibe.
Palm Court
Centrally located, and with a stunning stained glass ceiling overhead, this space offers truly memorable architecture; making it a great option for a large stand-up reception.
The Willow Stream spa
Rated as one of the best spas in Canada by Conde Nast Traveler, the Willows Stream Spa at the Fairmont Empress is a must-visit. From dreamy lavender-infused relaxing massage treatments to luxurious pedicures and facials, they have everything onsite to help you get ready for your big day.
Unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else
The Fairmont Empress is famous for its daily afternoon tea service in the Lobby Lounge. Since 1908, the hotel has served England’s most beloved ritual to guests, pouring half a million cups of tea each year – more than many tea rooms in London, England! Tea is served in elegant Royal China modeled after original sets gifted to the hotel by King George VI in 1939.
With many people embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle, this iconic tradition provides guests an unforgettable experience and a chance to connect over delectable scones, tea sandwiches, and treats.
Location
The Fairmont Empress is located in the heart of Victoria with expansive views of the harbor and a short walk from shopping, dining, and the seaplane terminal. Guests can explore the city, take a seaplane to see the sights from above, and board a whale-watching tour, steps from the hotel.
Whether you are planning to say “I do” or want to experience part of Canadian history while enjoying a luxury getaway, Canada’s Castle on the Coast is the ideal starting point to explore British Columbia’s stunning natural and expansive beauty.
