The Met Gala has become a true fashion holiday with New York as the celebration’s epicenter but its influence is far reaching. Media outlets are equally invested in the party with red carpet photos and experts commentary that reaches worldwide. It’s come a long way since 1948 when Eleanor Lambert dreamed it up as a fundraising event for the Costume Institute—it’s morphed into a day to celebrate outrageous fashion—a day of self-expression within the confines of the theme. The event itself is generally a celeb-only party on the opening day of the exhibit, with a price tag of $75,000 but its influence is far reaching. Photos of the red carpet circulate, although this time it was a blue carpet, while people engage in the sport of fashion commentary weighing in on their favorite and most hated looks. Offshoot fashion parties and after-parties take place everywhere and mid-level fashion brands design looks based on the attendees attire.

The current exhibit and dress theme for the gala is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style“, which served to honor black style and the role fashion plays and played in the black diaspora. The event was chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams as well as Anna Wintour.  Attendees interpreted the theme individualistically with tailored suiting and sharp-cut jackets ruling the blue carpet. But there were a variety of looks including one that is missing pants, which Sabrina Carpenter rocked and an array of different gowns. Zack Posen, The Gap’s creative director designed a look worn by Laura Harrier with elephant jeans and a sheer billowy sleeved top. Hats seemed to be the accessory du jour as well as borrowed jewels from legacy brands like Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany& Co. Suiting looks
