7 Tips For Plus Size Brides

The bridal industry has come a long way when it comes to size inclusivity, but we certainly still have a long way to go.  Here are 7 tips for plus size brides to ensure that they have the best experience when shopping for their wedding dress:

  1. Research Bridal Stores with Size-Inclusive Options

Look for bridal stores/boutiques that specifically mention carrying a wide range of sizes, including plus sizes. Many boutiques only carry samples in smaller sizes, so it’s important to find stores that are size-inclusive and offer a variety of styles in larger sample sizes. When in doubt, call and speak to a stylist at the boutique.  If they don’t have the styles that you want to try on in your size, ask if they are able to have a size-inclusive sample sent in for you to try on.

  1. Remember, that size is just a number

Wedding dress sizing often differs from street sizes, so don’t get caught up in the number.  Your stylist will compare your measurements to the designer’s size chart to determine your size.  The key is to focus on the correct size being ordered. Don’t worry about the actual number. If you fall between sizes, inquire about split sizing or if you can pay extra to have the gowns made to your measurements. That will cut down on alterations.

  1. Be Open to Different Silhouettes

While you may have a specific style in mind, trying different silhouettes can be helpful. A-line dresses, ball gowns, and fit-and-flare styles can be particularly flattering for curvier figures. Keep an open mind about what might suit your body shape best and trust the stylist you are working with.

  1. Focus on Comfort and Support

Comfort is key, especially on your wedding day. Pay attention to the structure of the dress, such as boning, built-in corsets, or thicker straps for added support. A well-constructed dress will help you feel comfortable and confident.  Also think about the type of undergarments that you might want to wear under your gown and bring them with you or try them on in the store when you are trying on the sample gown.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Customizations

Many designers offer customizations that can make a dress feel more personalized. Whether it’s adding sleeves, raising the neckline, or adjusting the hemline,  customizing your gown may make you feel more comfortable and will truly make it your own. Inquire with the bridal stylist about what can be done by the designer in production vs in alterations with the seamstress.  It is important to know that any customizations that you make to the gown will increase the price of the dress.

  1. Limit the Number of Opinions

When shopping for your gown, it is often difficult to know who to involve in the process. It is always best to limit the opinions to a few trusted people who understand your personal style, your vision for your wedding day look and your budget.  Too many opinions can lead to confusion and frustration.  Ultimately, your opinion is the only one that truly counts!

  1. Trust the Experience

Bridal stylists are there to help you find the perfect dress. Trust their expertise and be honest about what you’re looking for. Communicating clearly about what you like and don’t like will help them guide you in the right direction.

These tips can help plus-size brides (or any bride) feel empowered and confident when shopping for their wedding dresses! Happy shopping!
