Jumping The Broom: The McKoys

When the big day approaches, all eyes are usually on the bride. But what about the groom? What does he want to wear? How does he want to enter into this pivotal step in his life? What are his thoughts and intentions as he walks towards the altar? That’s what this issue of World Bride magazine is all about, and I couldn’t be happier to be in partnership with Myrdith Leon-McCormick as the magazine explores all aspects of the wedding journey, with this issue’s focus being on the groom.

As you can see in the photos above, one Baltimore couple partnered on their nuptials, creating space for the groom, Christopher McKoy, to explore his creativity alongside his bride, Kori-Morgan Hil,l and their daughter Harper-Grace McKoy. He chose a pure white tuxedo for their August beachside wedding in Herrington Harbor, MD. Being a Kappa, he and his frat brothers shared a sacred ceremony and a healthy send-off gift of cash to start their life together. As WBM discussed this month, getting your finances right for marriage is essential to overall marital health.

This theme and more will be echoed in a book that I am working on right now. I am updating my first book, Jumping the Broom: The African American Wedding Planner. And I am gathering stories like Kori-Morgan and Chris’s to share insights into how couples are getting married today. We are exploring everything from what they wear to what rituals they include in their ceremonies and receptions and how they intend to start their new life.

In Jumping the Broom Today, we will be highlighting stories of many couples who have gotten married and who want to inspire others with their love story. Could that be you? If you and/or your spouse is of African descent you qualify to be considered. We are looking for couples who incorporated unique rituals and traditions into their ceremony and reception, same-sex couples who found meaningful ways to honor their bond, interracial and interreligious couples who borrowed from each other’s cultures to fortify their union, couples who have renewed their bonds with finesse, those who have welcomed destination weddings, and more. We will work with WBM Real Brides Real Beauty Contest to identify and select a few of your stories to help couples who are planning their weddings make their dreams come true.
