During the difficult times of COVID-19, especially during the lockdown, we all took a laidback approach in our fashion and beauty choices. Just like many industries, the bridal industry also had to adapt to the constant pandemic’s surprises. Weddings were canceled and some postponed. Once weddings became possible to celebrate, small and intimate gatherings became the way to go. Brides opted for a more relaxed vibe – we saw more long flowy dresses, as well as an increase of short cocktail-like dresses, natural makeup, and hair looks complimented this trend. When it came down to makeup, brides opted for lipstick shades of nudes and soft pinks which made wearing a mask more accessible.
At the beginning of 2021, we continued to see this trend. As we are approaching the end of the year, we are seeing a shift in the way we approach gatherings and celebrations. The way we are expressing ourselves through our fashion and beauty style is a reflection of this change. There is definitely an eagerness to leave the comfort and leisure of the pandemic days behind. With this said, we saw this shift in bridal fashion as well during this past New York Bridal Fashion Week. We were able to see a vast array of styles that promised to suit each bride’s unique style, from romantic and ethereal dresses to more elaborated and fashion-forward ones. No matter the length or the style of the dress, a common theme we were able to definitely notice was ‘Elegance and Sophistication.’ We were able to see the sophistication in the decadent details of crystals, embroideries, lace, and fabrics.
Just as the dress is an expression of each unique bride, so is her makeup and hair. Many brides are looking forward to not only having one grand entrance, but two, and even three or more… and with the multiple wardrobe upgrades, brides are also playing with their makeup and hair looks to go along with each of their dresses. Many bridal designers have cleverly created versatile dresses that can transition from day to evening or from a more relaxed vibe to a more glamourous one.
With the same versatility in mind, as a professional makeup artist, I like to create this “upgrade” and transition in makeup for brides.
