There is something about a great wedding movie.
Maybe it is the dress. Maybe it is the flowers, the fabulous location, the family drama, the unexpected kiss—or that one scene that makes you stop the movie and say, “Wait… I LOVE that!”
As writers, editors and journalists who spend our days documenting people, places, fashion, celebrations and experiences, we are naturally inspired by stories. And some of our favorite stories happen to unfold on the big screen.
So, in the spirit of movie night, we asked ourselves: Which wedding, romance and fashion movies have inspired us?
The answer? Well… there are quite a few!
Our list is certainly not definitive. There are hundreds of movies that have given us ideas about love, fashion, family, friendship, weddings and all the wonderfully complicated things that happen before someone says, “I do.”
But for now, here are a few of the films that make the WBM editors smile, laugh, cry, dream—and occasionally wonder why someone didn’t simply hire a wedding planner!
The Wedding Planner
Let’s start with a personal cult classic.
The Wedding Planner is one of those movies that makes wedding professionals feel seen. And who doesn’t love a woman who can practically calculate the length of a wedding by the song?
The movie gives us gorgeous weddings, fashion, romance, beautiful locations and, of course, the ultimate complication: falling for the wrong groom.
For us, it is also a reminder that weddings are productions. There is a beginning, middle and end—and every detail matters.
Working Girl
Now this one has a special connection for us. In Working Girl, the characters crash a wedding while trying to make a business deal. And here’s the fun WBM connection: the location is the beautiful Otto Kahn and James Burden Mansions.
Yes, that kind of connection makes watching a movie even more fun! It is also a wonderful reminder that fashion, business, ambition and personal reinvention can all exist in the same story.
My Best Friend’s Wedding
Give us the gay best friend, the unforgettable karaoke scene and plenty of romantic chaos! My Best Friend’s Wedding is one of those films where the wedding is almost secondary to the relationships surrounding it. And isn’t that often how real weddings feel?
There are the best friends, the exes, the relatives, the people who shouldn’t have been invited, and the person who suddenly realizes they may have been looking in the wrong direction all along. And yes—the karaoke is gloriously awful.
Crazy Rich Asians
If you want to talk about THE wedding scene, we have to talk about Crazy Rich Asians. The cathedral. The fashion. The production. The music. The romance. The scale.
It is one of those cinematic wedding moments that make you think, Okay… now THIS is an entrance. But beyond the spectacular visuals, the movie gives us something we love at WBM: family, culture, tradition, and the many ways love is expressed through celebration.
And those elaborate parties? Inspiration overload!
27 Dresses
If you’ve ever been a bridesmaid, you probably have feelings about 27 Dresses. Twenty-seven dresses. Twenty-seven memories. And one woman who has spent so much time helping everyone else celebrate their love that she almost forgets about her own.
The movie is fun, colorful and wonderfully fashion-forward—and it reminds us that sometimes the person standing beside the bride deserves her own love story, too.
Runaway Bride
Who says the bride always knows exactly what she wants? Runaway Bride reminds us that getting married and knowing who you are are two completely different things.
And those wedding dresses? A fashion lesson in finding your own identity. Sometimes the most important thing a bride can discover before saying “I do” is herself.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Family. Food. Culture. Traditions. Opinions. Lots and lots of opinions.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is beloved because it feels human. It reminds us that weddings aren’t just about two people. They are often about two families—and sometimes two entire cultures—coming together. And let’s be honest: almost every family has at least one relative who could have walked directly out of this movie.
Shotgun Wedding & Monster-in-Law
Sometimes you don’t need inspiration. Sometimes you just need to laugh. Shotgun Wedding gives us action, romance, and ridiculous situations, while Monster-in-Law reminds us that planning the wedding may be easier than managing the family! Both are great choices when your movie-night requirement is simple: make us laugh.
The Devil Wears Prada & The September Issue
Okay, these aren’t traditional wedding movies—but WBM is a fashion publication, so naturally they belong here.
The Devil Wears Prada is a masterclass in fashion, editorial culture, image and transformation.
And The September Issue gives fashion lovers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the enormous amount of work that goes into creating a major fashion publication.
For brides, there is a lesson here: your wedding is also an editorial story. Your dress, beauty look, venue, flowers, stationery, jewelry and photographs are all part of your visual language.
Sex and the City: The Movie
We cannot forget Sex and the City: The Movie.
The Vogue bridal shoot alone gives us enough fashion inspiration for several weddings! And then there are the almost-married moments, the friendships, the heartbreak and the question that the entire series has always asked:
What does it really mean to find your person? And yes, we also have a soft spot for Sex and the City 2.
Coming to America
That wedding finale! Coming to America brings together romance, culture, family, fashion, music and celebration in a way that still makes the ending memorable. And its sequel, Coming 2 America, gives us another opportunity to enjoy the grandeur, humor and royal wedding fantasy.
The Godfather
A wedding movie list would be incomplete without acknowledging The Godfather. The opening wedding sequence is practically a film within a film. While the movie itself is obviously much bigger than the wedding, the celebration gives us an incredible look at family, tradition, music, food, fashion and community. It reminds us that weddings are often cultural time capsules.
Father of the Bride
We love both generations of this classic.
Father of the Bride (1991) is a wonderful reminder of the emotional—and financial—roller coaster of giving your daughter away.
And we also love Father of the Bride (2022) with Andy García and Gloria Estefan.
Different generations. Different families. Same universal truth:
Weddings can bring out ALL the feelings.
