Beat the Bloat Before the Big Day

Why the Scale Isn’t Always Telling the Truth

By Monica Tranter

A bride once told me she stepped on the scale three days before her wedding and burst into tears.

She had been eating well.

Walking every day.

Drinking more water.

Taking care of herself.

Yet somehow the number on the scale had gone up.

What she didn’t realize was that she hadn’t gained weight.

She was bloated.

And she’s not alone.

As wedding season approaches, many brides and grooms become hyper-focused on every pound, every inch, and every reflection in the mirror. Every fitting feels important. Every photograph feels permanent. Every number on the scale suddenly seems to carry more meaning than it should.

But sometimes what you think is weight gain isn’t weight gain at all.

Sometimes it’s simply your body asking for support.

And understanding that difference may be one of the most empowering things you can learn before your wedding day.

What Is Bloating Really?

Bloating is often caused by temporary water retention, digestive stress, inflammation, hormonal fluctuations, or lifestyle habits.

Unlike body fat, bloating can change from day to day and even hour to hour.

One morning you wake up feeling comfortable in your clothes.

The next day your stomach feels swollen, your rings feel tighter, and you’re suddenly questioning everything you’ve been doing.

The truth is that bloating is often the body’s way of communicating that something is out of balance.

Common causes include:

  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Dehydration
  • Eating too quickly
  • Excess sodium
  • Highly processed foods
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Travel
  • Sitting for long periods

For busy brides, grooms, wedding planners, photographers, florists, and everyone working behind the scenes in the wedding industry, bloating can become an unwanted companion during stressful seasons.

The good news?

Most bloating is temporary.

And most of it can be improved with simple daily habits.

The Cortisol Connection

Stress affects far more than our minds.

It affects digestion.

It affects sleep.

It affects hormones.

It affects how our bodies hold onto water.

One of the key players behind this response is cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone.

Cortisol is designed to help us respond to challenges and keep us safe.

But when stress becomes constant, the body may begin to retain water, experience digestive discomfort, increase cravings, and store more weight around the midsection.

Sound familiar?

Wedding planning often brings:

  • Financial pressure
  • Family dynamics
  • Endless decisions
  • Travel arrangements
  • Time constraints
  • Emotional overwhelm

The body doesn’t always distinguish between planning a wedding and facing a threat.

It simply responds.

Which is why wellness isn’t only about what we eat.

It’s also about how we think, breathe, move, recover, and care for ourselves.

Sometimes the body isn’t asking for another diet.

Sometimes it’s asking for less stress.

Inflammation: The Hidden Cause of Bridal Bloat

When many people hear the word bloating, they immediately blame food.

But often the real culprit is inflammation.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to stress, injury, poor sleep, environmental toxins, and highly processed foods.

During wedding season, many people are experiencing:

  • More stress
  • Less sleep
  • More dining out
  • Increased alcohol consumption
  • Irregular schedules
  • Less recovery time

All of these factors can contribute to inflammation, leaving you feeling puffy, sluggish, uncomfortable, and frustrated.

One of my favorite ways to support digestion and reduce inflammation is through simple daily rituals.

A lemon, ginger, and turmeric shot can be a wonderful addition to your morning routine.

Lemon supports hydration.

Ginger has long been used to support digestion and ease digestive discomfort.

Turmeric is well known for its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sometimes small daily habits create the biggest changes.

Recovery Is the New Wellness Luxury

In today’s world, many people spend more time pushing their bodies than restoring them.

Yet recovery may be one of the most overlooked wellness tools available.

We often think we need to do more.

More workouts.

More restrictions.

More discipline.

More effort.

But sometimes the body responds best when we give it permission to recover.

Practices that support recovery may include:

Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy has become increasingly popular for supporting circulation, cellular energy, and overall wellness.

Cold Plunge Therapy

Cold exposure may help support recovery, resilience, mental clarity, and a healthier response to stress.

Walking

One of the simplest and most effective wellness tools available.

A short walk after meals can support digestion, circulation, and stress reduction.

Meditation & Breathwork

A few minutes of intentional breathing can completely change how the nervous system responds to stress.

Sleep

Never underestimate the power of rest.

The body heals, restores, and re-balances while we sleep.

Sometimes feeling lighter isn’t about doing more.

It’s about creating space for the body to recover.

The Scale Doesn’t Measure Beauty

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is allowing a number on the scale to determine how they feel about themselves.

Your body is not a math equation.

A slight increase on the scale may simply reflect:

  • Water retention
  • Hormonal changes
  • Travel
  • Salt intake
  • Stress
  • Digestive changes

It does not mean you’ve failed.

It does not erase weeks or months of healthy habits.

And it certainly does not determine your beauty.

Remember:

The scale measures weight.

It does not measure confidence.

It does not measure joy.

It does not measure kindness.

It does not measure love.

And it certainly does not measure your worth.

Years from now, when you look back at your wedding photos, you won’t remember what the scale said.

You’ll remember how you felt.

The people around you.

The laughter.

The tears.

The love.

And that is what truly matters.

Everything is exactly as it should be.

There is nowhere else to be.

Nothing else to do.

Just this moment.

Now let’s take an ASAMHA™ breath together.

Inhale and Activate.

Awaken your diaphragm.

Awaken your senses.

Inhale and Maintain.

Hold the breath softly.

Maintain the lift.

Maintain the awareness.

Maintain the connection between body, mind, and spirit.

HA

Exhale and Harmony & Release.

Let go of the pressure.

Let go of comparison.

Let go of the need to be perfect.

Return to acceptance.

Return to gratitude.

Return to the wonderful person you already are.

Repeat 5 to 8 times.

Then open your eyes.

Stand a little taller.

Smile a little bigger.

Carry that feeling with you into the rest of your day.

One Breath. One Lift. One Shift.
